7.5 Recording Statements

Police may record statements under the CrPC, but must do so in a way that is calm, respectful and non-intimidating.

Statements should be:

• recorded in simple language
• free from leading or suggestive questions
• limited to what is necessary
• documented accurately

Where possible, interview the child in:

• quiet, private space
• with minimal uniformed presence
• without unnecessary observers
